Status: Nepali is the official language of Sikkim and District of Darjeeling. It is one of the Indian languages of the Indo-Aryan family and belonging to the eastern Pahri group of the Pahri languages. Nepali is the Lingua-franca of the North-eastern region of India. Nepali is the national language of the country of Nepal also.

Geographical Distribution: In India Nepali is distributed mainly in the North India, and in recent time, it has been spreading to far western India also by virtue of being a National language. The districts with the lowest percentage of Nepali in the Northern part of Sikkim are dominated by Tibeto Burmese speakers where a Tibetan and Lepcha dialect is spoken.

Regional Dialects: Nepali is divided into three dialects: the western dialect (spoken in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh), the central dialect (spoken Sikkim and North Bengal), and the eastern dialect (spoken in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Mizoram).

Orthography: Like Hindi, Nepali is written In Devanagari.

Population: The percentage of speakers of Nepali language 0.28% (2,871,749 speakers) for 2001 has been worked out on the total population of India (total population 1,028.610, 328).
